Isla Mujeres and Cozumel are both Caribbean islands in Quintana Roo, but from Cancún they are not interchangeable day trips. Isla Mujeres is the easy, compact island escape directly off Cancún. Cozumel is the stronger dive-and-reef destination reached most naturally through Playa del Carmen. If you only have one day, logistics should influence the decision as much as the beach photos.
My quick answer: choose Isla Mujeres for the simplest day from Cancún, Playa Norte, a compact town and mixed-interest groups. Choose Cozumel when reefs, scuba diving or a bigger island are the point and you are willing to spend more of the day in transit.
The biggest difference is the journey
Ultramar currently runs Isla Mujeres services from Puerto Juárez and selected Hotel Zone terminals. Puerto Juárez is the workhorse route for many Cancún visitors, and the operator advises arriving about 30 minutes before departure. Schedules and fares can change, so I check the actual travel date rather than memorising a timetable.
Cozumel normally means travelling south from Cancún to Playa del Carmen, then taking the passenger ferry across. That extra road leg is why I rarely recommend Cozumel as a casual half-day from a Cancún hotel.
Isla Mujeres: best for easy island time
Isla Mujeres works well when your group wants different things. One person can swim, another can wander Centro, someone else can rent transport for the southern end, and nobody has to be a diver to justify the trip.
Playa Norte is the headline beach, but do not reduce the island to one strip of sand. A full day can combine the northern town and beach with Punta Sur or a slower lunch. The island is compact enough that you can choose depth over rushing.
Cozumel: best when the sea is the main attraction
Cozumel's reputation is built around reefs, diving and snorkelling. If your group contains certified divers, or people who want a marine-focused day rather than shopping and beach-hopping, the longer journey can make sense.
The island itself is much larger than Isla Mujeres. That gives you more coastline and room to explore, but it also means you need a clearer transport plan if you want to leave San Miguel rather than simply arrive, eat and return.
Do not compare only ferry fares
A cheap-looking ferry ticket can hide the real cost of the day. For Isla Mujeres, add transport from your hotel to the chosen Cancún terminal, island transport if needed, food and activities. For Cozumel, add the Cancún–Playa del Carmen road transfer, ferry, local island transport and the extra time cost.
Ultramar's current fare pages explicitly warn that prices and departures can change without notice. That is exactly why this guide avoids hard-coding a “total day cost” that will be stale before your holiday.
Which island has the better beach day?
For a simple first-time beach day from Cancún, I give Isla Mujeres the edge. Playa Norte is easy to understand and pairs naturally with Centro. Cozumel has beaches, but the island's strongest reason to make the longer journey is usually marine activity or a broader island itinerary.
Which is better for snorkelling?
For casual snorkelling, both can work with the right operator and conditions. For a trip built around serious reef time, Cozumel has the stronger identity. Reef access is regulated and conditions vary; use authorised operators, do not stand on coral, and treat the guide's environmental brief as part of the activity rather than optional theatre.
Which is better for scuba divers?
Cozumel is the easy winner if scuba is the objective. If you are learning to dive in Cancún, though, you do not need to turn certification into a Cozumel transfer marathon. Complete the course around Cancún if that fits the operator and sea conditions, then save Cozumel for certified fun dives later.

Families and mixed groups
Isla Mujeres usually wins for families because the day can be shorter and more flexible. If someone gets tired, you can simplify the plan. Cozumel is excellent for a family that specifically wants reef activities, but the road-plus-ferry journey makes a long day for small children.
Motion sickness matters
If someone in your group gets seasick, remember that Cozumel requires both the drive south and a ferry crossing, while Isla Mujeres is a more direct island transfer from Cancún. Sea conditions still matter on either route. Sit where motion feels manageable, avoid a huge breakfast and follow appropriate medical advice if using motion-sickness medication.
Can you visit both?
Absolutely — just not sensibly on the same day. A split trip with Cancún or Isla Mujeres first and Playa del Carmen/Riviera Maya later makes Cozumel much easier. Ultramar even markets two-island products, but that does not change the geography: I would rather give each island enough time than collect ferry terminals as holiday achievements.

My verdict
If I am sleeping in Cancún and somebody asks me for the easiest island day, I choose Isla Mujeres. If they tell me the entire reason for the excursion is coral, diving and underwater time, I choose Cozumel and accept the longer logistics. The best island is the one whose strongest experience matches your group — not the one with the prettier ferry advert.
