Isla Mujeres works just as well as a half-day escape as it does an overnight stay. Ferries leave regularly from Puerto Juárez and Gran Puerto (both on the mainland north of the Hotel Zone), with the crossing taking roughly 15–20 minutes.
What to do with a day
- Playa Norte — calm, shallow, sandbar-laced water on the island's north end; the easiest walk from the ferry dock.
- Golf cart loop — rent one near the dock and circle the island; it's small enough to see most of it in a few hours.
- Punta Sur — the island's southern tip, with a small sculpture garden, a lighthouse, and views back toward Cancún.
- Downtown (Hidalgo Ave.) — the main strip for lunch, ceviche, and souvenir shopping.
Getting there without a tour
You don't need a package tour — walk-up ferry tickets are simple, and golf cart rental on arrival is straightforward. A tour adds convenience (hotel pickup, guided stops) at a markup; going independently is easy for confident travelers.
