Playa del Carmen sits about 65km south of Cancún — roughly 45 minutes by ADO bus or car — and is probably the destination most commonly tacked onto a Cancún trip without much planning. It's worth understanding what's actually different about it before you go.
What Playa del Carmen is
A mid-sized beach town built around the pedestrianised Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) — a long strip of boutique hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops stretching parallel to the beach. The vibe is distinctly more independent-traveler, digital-nomad, European than Cancún's Hotel Zone — smaller resorts, more street life, fewer mega-clubs.
The ferry to Cozumel
Playa del Carmen's biggest practical advantage over Cancún for divers and snorkelers: the ferry to Cozumel leaves from here, a 45-minute crossing to one of the world's great reef systems. If diving Cozumel is on your list, Playa makes a better base than Cancún for that specific goal.
Cancún to Playa del Carmen: getting there
ADO buses run frequently from Cancún's main bus terminal and from the airport — comfortable, air-conditioned, around 45 minutes. Alternatively, colectivos (shared vans) run the same route cheaper but less comfortably from a departure point near the Cancún bus station. Driving is easy on the 307 highway, with the toll route saving significant time.
Day trip or overnight?
Playa works as a day trip — walk 5th Avenue, have lunch, see the beach, catch an evening bus back — but its character reveals itself better over a night or two. Many visitors split a longer trip: a few nights in Cancún's Hotel Zone for resort comfort, a couple of nights in Playa for a different atmosphere. The two are easily combined without logistical complexity.
What Playa doesn't have
Nothing close to Cancún's scale of nightlife, the mega-resort infrastructure, or the same ease of day-tripping to Chichen Itza. It's smaller, slower, and more boutique — which is either the point or a limitation depending on what you're after.
