Cancún has a reputation as a splurge destination, largely because the Hotel Zone dominates most people's mental image of it. There's a genuinely cheaper way to do it.
The biggest lever: where you stay
Downtown (El Centro) hotels and guesthouses run a fraction of Hotel Zone resort rates, with the R-1 bus making the beach a short, cheap ride away rather than out of reach entirely.
Eating well for less
Skip Hotel Zone restaurant prices for anything beyond a splurge meal — downtown food, especially around Mercado 28 and Parque de las Palapas, delivers real quality at local prices.
Getting around cheaply
The R-1 bus costs a fraction of a taxi for the same Hotel Zone route, and colectivos handle downtown and nearby-town trips cheaply too. Save taxis for late nights or when you're short on time.
Free and near-free things to do
Playa Delfines is free and public. Parque de las Palapas offers free evening entertainment alongside its food stalls. Many cenotes charge a modest fee that's a fraction of an organized tour price if you arrange your own transport.
Where not to cut corners
Travel insurance and basic water/sun safety gear aren't the place to save — the cost of skipping them if something goes wrong dwarfs what they cost upfront.
