Quick answer: use ADO if budget matters and you are comfortable making the final connection; use a reputable pre-booked private transfer for the simplest hotel-door journey; use an authorised taxi/airport transport desk as a last-minute option. Ignore anyone who claims every airport bus drops directly at your resort.
What ASUR currently lists at Cancún Airport
ASUR, the airport operator, lists ground-transport categories including ADO buses, taxis and car rental. Its airport information is the right starting point because transport arrangements and terminal operations can change.
ADO service is available from airport terminals including T2, T3 and T4. Check your actual arrival terminal and the operator's current departure information rather than walking toward an old pickup point from a blog post.
ADO bus: best low-cost default for downtown
ADO is especially useful when your accommodation is downtown, near the bus terminal, or when you are comfortable completing the last leg separately. The coach takes you from the airport to Cancún's ADO terminal; from that central point you can connect with local transport.
ADO's own Cancún guidance describes the R-1 local route as useful toward the Hotel Zone and the R-2 toward areas including Mercado 28/Walmart. That is a second local journey, not the same airport coach magically becoming a resort shuttle.
ADO to a Hotel Zone resort: count the whole journey

The Hotel Zone stretches along Boulevard Kukulcán. A resort near the northern end is a different drive from a property much farther south, and traffic/road works can change travel time. In 2026, Cancún has continued mobility and infrastructure work, including Tren Maya-linked transport integration, so use a range rather than treating an old “20-minute transfer” claim as a guarantee.
Downtown transfer
Downtown is where ADO has its biggest convenience advantage because the airport coach terminates centrally. If your hotel is walkable with luggage, the transfer can be straightforward; otherwise a short local taxi from the terminal may still be cheaper/easier than buying a full airport-to-hotel private ride.
Playa Mujeres / Costa Mujeres
Northern resort areas are not the same as central Cancún. If your accommodation is in Playa Mujeres/Costa Mujeres, check the precise property location before choosing ADO. A private/shared transfer often becomes more attractive because the final connection from downtown can be significant.
Puerto Morelos and Riviera Maya
If your hotel is south of the airport, do not assume travelling first into downtown Cancún makes sense. Compare direct transfer, ADO/intercity options and the location of your accommodation. A “Cancún package” can actually be in Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen or farther south.
Tren Maya: useful network, not a universal hotel transfer
In August 2026, Benito Juárez municipality announced the relaunch of a Tren Maya connection and Tren Maya Conecta buses linking the railway station with central Cancún, shopping areas, the Hotel Zone and airport. That expands the city's intermodal network, but it does not mean every arriving air passenger should use the train station for a simple resort transfer.
Use it when the rail journey is part of your wider route; do not add a station transfer just because the service exists.
Families and child seats
If you need an infant/child seat, ask before booking and get the arrangement in writing. Vehicle standards and availability vary. A transfer being “family friendly” in marketing copy does not prove that the required seat is included.
For a family with several bags, a vehicle that fits everyone safely can be worth more than chasing the lowest per-person fare.
